Android OS to clock nearly 85 market share in 2018, claims IDC

Android OS is expected to capture nearly 85 percent market share in the operating system space by the end of 2018. The volumes of the smartphones with Android OS are expected to grow at a five-year Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 2.4 percent, with shipments approaching 1.41 billion in 2022, market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) said in its latest Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. Also, the average selling prices (ASPs) of the Android shipments are growing at a double-digit pace and are expected to grow 11.4 percent in 2018 to $262, up from $235 in 2017. For iOS, the firm said that iPhone volumes are expected to grow by 2.1 percent in 2018 to 220.4 million in total. IDC forecasts iPhones to grow at a five-year CAGR of 2.0 percent, reaching volumes of 238.5 million by 2022. When it comes to the worldwide smartphone market, IDC says that it is expected to decline again in 2018 and will experience low single-digit growth from 2019 through the end of its forecast in 2022. The firm forecasts worldwide smartphone shipments to decline 0.7 percent in 2018 to 1.455 billion units, down from 1.465 billion in 2017. However, the market is believed to return to positive growth in the second half of 2018 with volumes up 1.1 percent compared to the second half of 2017. In the long-term forecast, the overall smartphone market is expected to reach 1.646 billion units shipped in 2022. When breaking down the growth by device type, the large-screen smartphones (5.5 inch and larger) will lead the charge with volumes of 941.6 million in 2018, accounting for 64.7 percent of all smartphones, up from 623.2 million units in 2017 and 42.5 percent share. By 2022, shipments of these larger screen smartphones will jump to 1.391 billion units, or 84.5 percent of overall shipment volume. Also, the anticipation of the two iPhone models with over 6-inch display and available for shipment in the second half of 2018, will act as another catalyst toward driving these important display trends. “With two out of three new iPhones expected to be larger than 6 inches, Apple will not be left behind in the 2018 race for increased screen real estate. You could say the term 'phablet' is becoming less relevant now that most smartphones will ship with larger screens, and when folding screens start coming into play in the medium term, this screen trend will evolve in new directions,” Melissa Chau, Associate Research Director with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Device Trackers, said in a statement.

Mozilla Firefox will soon block all ad-traffic by implementing a will not track policy

Tracking user behaviour online has become a dominant source of revenue for many companies. By tracking what users do online, companies like Facebook, Google and Amazon are able to sell their services to advertisers in the form of targeted advertising. As users started to block cookies which were the original tracking method, companies developed newer, more persistent ways of tracking people through the browser, using technologies like invisible pixels and what not. Today, Mozilla is taking a stance against such practices, changing their policy in favour of the consumer, switching from passive a “do not track” policy to “will not track.” “In the near future, Firefox will, by default, protect users by blocking tracking while also offering a clear set of controls to give our users more choice over what information they share with sites,” said Mozilla VP of product strategy Nick Nguyen. The changes will roll out on a trial basis later in September with Firefox 63 which will block slow-loading trackers. Mozilla hopes that by the time Firefox 65 is released, it would have blocked all cross-website tracking by default. Mozilla will allow users to enable tracking if they need it and also add options to allow blocks for slow-loading trackers and third-party cookies. While all the popular browsers such as Google Chrome, Safari and Microsoft Edge (IE) offer a 'Do Not Track' feature, none of them are as aggressive as the method being implemented by Mozilla on Firefox. Mozilla states that this decision goes beyond just protecting their consumers’ privacy. It says that slow loading trackers take as much as 50 percent more time to load in comparison to regular trackers. Additionally, Mozilla says that many trackers use deceitful methods to collect more information on users than they think, warranting a step to keep them in check.

Leaked images show Google Pixel 3 having Pixel 2 XL-like design, 2915mAh battery

As the launch of the Google Pixel 3 XL gets closerm, there has been a surge in the number of leaks regarding the smartphone. The devcie was recently, seen in a YouTube hands-on video by a Ukrainian user named Распаковываем. Amid these extensive reports and videos, the smaller Google Pixel 3 has managed to remain pretty well hidden, but not anymore. An anonymous redditor has shared the photos of what it claims to be the Google Pixel 3, which show the phone’s overall design and reveals some information about the display, its resolution and the battery pack that the smaller Pixel is expected to launch with. The images show a black-coloured smartphone that looks like the Google Pixel 2 XL. It has a two-tone back panel of which almost one-third is covered in glass, while the remaining section seems to be matte. There is only one rear-camera with an LED flash and the fingerprint sensor is centrally located on the back. From the side, the images show the phone carrying a power button and a volume rocker on the right edge. On the front, there is no notch and the bezels on the side seem thinner than the Pixel 2 XL. The dual-camera setup is not seen clearly but some screenshots suggest two front shooters. The major difference in design can be noticed in the length of the front-facing dual speakers. Also, there is a small opening between the rear-camera and the LED flash. Nothing has been talked about the pin-hole and it is assumed to be a microphone to capture the audio while a user is shooting a video. The Redditor also posted the screenshots, which reveal some specifications of the the device in question. According to the shared screenshots, the Google Pixel 3 is expected to sport a 5.5-inch display which will have a resolution of 2160x1080, 18:9 aspect ratio and 60GHz refresh rate. The battery capacity is suggested to be 2915mAh. When it comes to the camera, the two front-facing shooters are seen to feature 8MP sensors each. While the ‘Front Camera #1’ has f/1.8 and f/2.2 suggesting a variable aperture, the ‘Front Camera #2’ has a static f/1.8 aperture. It has been reported earlier that Google might have incorporated two camera on the front to them to apparently shoot ‘Super Selfies’ and improving a security/facial recognition feature, but there’s still no hard evidence of that. Google is also tipped to include a new Visual Core chip in the smartphones, which will be used for “more than just HDR+.” You can read more about the Pixel 3 XL smartphone here. Meanwhile, Google is also reportedly developing a ‘mid-tier’ Pixel smartphone keeping in mind the Indian market. Just like Apple, it seems Google also wants to target the Rs 40,000-Rs 50,000 segment where OnePlus is registering massive growth numbers. According to a report in The Economic Times, this India-centric phone could be made available in the country early next year. Previous reports have suggested that Google may incorporate a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC. Reportedly, Google Pixel Hardware team visited the country to understand the needs of an average Indian user. Google has only one percent market share in the premium segment and sold only 80,000 Pixel 2 phones since its launch in India last year. Image courtesy: 9to5google

PUBG Creator details five year plan for PUBG eSports

Calling PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or PUBG a popular game would be an understatement, to say the least. The game has already sold millions of copies and is available on PC, Xbox and mobile. Talking to UK based publication, Express, PUBG creator, Brendan ‘PlayerUnknown’ Greene talked about the future of the game. During the recent PUBG Invitational in Berlin, Greene said that a five-year plan is in place for PUBG eSports. However, the developers will not immediately focus on eSports. The first year plan revolves around finding a working format for eSports while improving the core gameplay experience for gamers. "We outlined a five-year plan for eSports, and this year's all about finding the format, finding the best ruleset for everything and trying to standardise everything so that this can grow," Greene said before adding, “Year one is just stabilising what we have, really getting the game competitive and providing a really good foundation to build an eSport on top of.” Greene plans to start off the gaming title from amateur level and then move to pro-league, making it sustainable. He also stressed the importance of creating a self-sustainable esports ecosystem for the game. "We want to build a self-sustaining ecosystem," he continued. "We understand that you have to support players, it can't be just on the teams to support players. You have to find a way for them to invest in your eSport." For now, Bluehole, the developers of the game, are more concerned with adding quality of life updates. The company recently started a new initiative called ‘Fix PUBG’. The initiative aims to fix some of the major issues in the game over the coming months. The first of the fixes have already rolled out to PC gamers, and the company has stated that these fixes would make their way to the Xbox version in two to four weeks. Speaking of the Xbox version, it will finally preview and be available as a full release from September 4 onwards.

BlackBerry has announced its latest Key2 LE smartphone that comes with a full QWERTY keypad. Apple to launch 2018 iPhones on September 12

New iPhones are incoming. Apple has sent out invites for an event on September 12 at the Steve Jobs Theatre at its Cupertino Apple Park campus. There is no ‘official confirmation’ that the iPhones are launching next month, but the company tends to unveil the smartphones around this time of the year. Based on several leaks and reports, three variants of the iPhone will be launched along with a new Apple Watch, iPad Pro and probably a MacBook Air. The logo on the invite along with the slogan ‘Gather Round’ has got people guessing, but it could just be a top-down view of the amphitheatre where Tim Cook will take centerstage. What’s interesting is the gold colour of the logo. Will there be a gold coloured iPhone? Shortly after the invites were sent out, 9to5Mac reported at least two of the upcoming iPhone variants will be called iPhone XS. The blog showed a leaked photo which they claimed to be the first glimpse of the devices. It does make sense as Apple has used the ‘S’ moniker to offer incremental refinements with improved performance and features. The two models will reportedly be offered in a gold finish. The iPhone X was Apple’s major redesign after many years. Apple introduced FaceID, did away with TouchID and fitted a 5.8-inch OLED display with a notch on top. The phone has been one of the company’s best-selling devices, even though it’s price touched $999 in the US. This time around, Apple is rumoured to introduce a variant larger than the iPhone X, along with another more affordable one. Furthermore, the company is expectd to offer changes in the design and colour, improved performance, perhaps a boost in screen resolution, better cameras and probably a longer battery life. Apple is also rumoured to introduce the Apple Watch Series 4 and a new iPad Pro during the same event. The event will be streamed live on the internet so we can all ‘gather round’ and watch the new iPhones being announced. Needless to say, the next few months are going to be crazy.

58-inch OLED Apple iPhone may be called iPhone XS, may be available in Gold: Report

Apple has officially sent out invites for a launch event that will take place on September 12 at company’s Apple Park headquarters. The comapny is expected to unveil of a number of new iPhone models, a refreshed Apple Watch, new AirPods, and announce a release date for the iOS 12 operating system. But just when people were talking about this development on the internet, 9to5mac has come out with a claim saying that it has got an exclusive access to the 5.8-inch and 6.54-inch iPhones, which are expeted to OLED displays. The website also claims that Apple will be calling this year’s smallest phone the ‘iPhone XS’. The platforms notes that the ‘iPhone XS’ will come in a new gold colour option that was not previously offered. The information provided by 9to5mac is in line other reports that have been making rounds in the industry. Recently, a Bloomberg report claimed that this is the ‘S’ year for iPhone and the models will have an ‘S’ added to their names. The report about the new Gold colour came as early as in March when designer Benjamin Geskin tweeted that Apple could be working on a new Blush Gold variant of the iPhone X. Other details about the phones, including the one with the LCD panel, are not yet known. Apart from the iPhones, the 9to5mac also claims to have seen the Apple Watch Series 4. It says that the biggest change that this year’s smartwatch gets an edge-to-edge display. “Apple has been rumored to be working on ~15% bigger displays for both sizes of Apple Watch — that rumor has been confirmed in the images we’ve discovered,” the website wrote. Apple has achieved this by reducing the bezel size around the watch display. In addition to the edge-to-edge display, Apple will also bring new watch face which is expected to show more information than the current faces display. The analog watch face reportedly shows a total of eight complications around the time and within the clock hands. The images obtained also show a new hole between the modified side button and Digital Crown, which is likely to be an additional microphone. Covcer and intext image courtesy: CNN, 9to5mac

The Great Red Spot on Jupiter reveals signs of water: NASA

The Great Red Spot is a giant spinning storm in Jupiter’s atmosphere that’s been raging for about 400 years. The Great Red Spot is more than twice the size of our dear blue planet and reaches speeds of about 434 km/h (270 mph). Scientists at NASA have been observing this storm for a while now, and have come across a new observation—they have detected signs of water just above the planet’s deepest clouds.  Researchers say that the pressure of the water mixed with its measurement of another oxygen-carrying gas, carbon monoxide, imply that Jupiter contains two to nine times more oxygen than the Sun. Published in the Astronomical Journal, the findings support theoretical and computer-simulation models that have previously predicted the presence of large amounts of water on Jupiter. The Great Red Spot is full of dense clouds. This makes it hard for electromagnetic energy to escape, thus allowing astronomers to learn very little about the chemistry happening within. “It turns out they’re not so thick that they block our ability to see deeply,” comments Gordon L Bjoraker, an astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. The data collected recently by NASA will supplement the data collected by the space agency’s Juno spacecraft, which at the moment, is around the giant planet with its own infrared spectrometer and a microwave radiometer that can probe deeper into Jupiter than anyone has probed before. “If it works, then maybe we can apply it elsewhere, like Saturn, Uranus or Neptune, where we don’t have a Juno,” comments Amy Simon, Goddard Space Flight Center’s planetary atmospheres expert. A theory that was widely accepted until some several decades ago is that Jupiter is identical to the Sun in composition and that it is a giant ball of hydrogen with a touch of helium. In other words, it was thought to be full of gas and no core. But this theory is seeing more and more evidence against it. The theory prevalent now is that Jupiter does have a core, and it’s possibly ten times heavier than the Earth. “Jupiter’s water abundance will tell us a lot about how the giant planet formed, but only if we can figure out how much water there is in the entire planet,” says Steven M. Levin, a Juno project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. At any rate, the days and years ahead will tell us more about the largest planet in our solar system. Heres how to get a clutter free Menu Bar by hiding app icons on macOS

macOS is quite streamlined and clutter-free with its neat Dashboard and slick touchpad gestures. However, in this OCD satisfying OS, there’s been a slight oversight as app icons on the Menu Bar keep cluttering the upper-right corner of the screen. The more apps you install, the more of these little icons keep accumulating there and unlike Windows’ System Tray, there is no functionality that groups unused icons into a group to keep the taskbar tidy. Those who want to get a minimalist look, they can install the Vanilla utility. So, here’s how to clean up your Mac Menu Bar. Downloading and Installing Vanilla  To install Vanilla, simply visit this website and click on the ‘Download Vanilla for free’ button. Once it downloads, move the downloaded .dmg file to your Applications folder and boot it up.  How it works Once booted, the Vanilla cleanup tool will add a carrot symbol and a dot to your Menu Bar. The app icons that are between the two new symbols will be hidden. One can drag icons between them by holding down the command key and the ones outside of it will show up on the right.  The app is free but one can also pay $4.99 (Rs 350 approx) for upgrading to its pro version. The pro version is compatible with light and dark menu bars and automatically hides icons again after five seconds. One nifty trick that the pro users will get is the keyboard shortcut to toggle the hidden icons.

Bose launches Alexa-powered Home Speaker 500 and two soundbars

Audio equipment pioneer Bose has launched a new wireless smart speaker, the Bose Home Speaker 500, and two new smart soundbars, the Bose Soundbar 700 and Soundbar 500. The company says that each device deliver a “size-defying performance with superior voice pickup and the power of Amazon Alexa now, other voice assistants to follow, and AirPlay 2 for simple streaming from Apple devices added in early 2019.” The Bose smart speaker and new soundbars use the proprietary mic technology found in Bose headsets and headphones. With Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Alexa built in, they can work together together as a multi-room system. The Home Speaker 500 is priced at £399.95 and the Soundbar 500 and 700 will be available for £499.95 and £799.95, respectively. The speakers will be sold at Bose retail stores, Bose.co.uk, and all authorised Bose dealers from October. Bose Soundbar 500 “Voice-controlled speakers aren’t new, and there are plenty of great options to choose from. But we had a different vision for ours, inspired by what we could uniquely do to make the experience better. All of our new smart speakers double up on functionality. It takes just one Home Speaker 500 to deliver true stereo separation — there’s no need to pair two. Our Soundbar 700 and 500 are thin and discreet with jaw-dropping surround sound — whether you’re streaming Spotify, or watching a movie. They combine Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for unbeatable ease of use, can be mixed and matched to play in sync or separately, and with new Alexa functionality and more VPAs on the way, they’ll only get better over time,” Doug Cunningham, category manager in the Bose Consumer Electronics Division, said in a statement. Bose Home Speaker 500 Bose claims that the Home Speaker 500 has the widest soundstage of any smart speaker available today. Wrapped in anodised aluminium, the speaker uses two custom drivers pointed in opposite directions resulting in a surround sound. The smart speaker comes with touch controls which are located on the top of it. The new Bose Home Speaker and Soundbars use advanced Bose mic technology and feature a custom-designed eight-microphone array precisely positioned for accurate near-field and far-field voice pickup in different situations. Bose Soundbar 700 Bose Soundbar 700 and Soundbar 500 The Bose Soundbar 700 has curved lines, a wraparound metal grille and a tempered glass top. It features Bose PhaseGuides, Bose DSP, custom low-profile transducers, and QuietPort technology to deliver depth to the sound which is being played on it. The Soundbar 500 is smaller and thinner than the Soundbar 700 and features a matte finish. Both new soundbars use proprietary ADAPTiQ — a technology by Bose to acoustically adjust to their surroundings, and HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC) for compatibility with future technology. They also can be wall-mounted or expanded with a wireless bass module and rear speakers for a full 5.1 experience.

Asus announces ZenBook Flip 13, Flip 15 at IFA 2018

Asus has announced an updated range of ZenBook Flip convertible laptops at IFA 2018 in Berlin, Germany. The updated range consists of the ZenBook Flip 13 (UX362) and the ZenBook Flip 15(UX562). The former features a 13.3-inch display, while the latter features a 15.6-inch display. What’s interesting is the way Asus has managed to carry on using the same screen sizes seen on previous models on a newer, more compact frame. To be specific, Asus has managed to reduce the laptop’s frame size by 10 percent. As the name suggests, this ZenBook’s display flips completely backwards to become a tablet. It can be placed in a laptop, tablet, and tent modes. What’s special about this convertible laptop is that it retains the ErgoLift hinge technology: it lifts and tilts the keyboard towards the user to offer a more comfortable typing angle when the display is opened beyond 135 degrees. The hinge has been torture-tested for up to 20,000 open-close cycles. Taking a look at the ports on the device, it’s got a full-size card reader slot, a USB port, and the power button on the left. On the right, it has the power port, a USB port, the audio jack, and a USB Type-C port. The top-end variant of the ZenBook Flip 15 is powered by an eighth-gen Intel Core i7 CPU and a Nvidia GeForce 1050 Max-Q GPU. You can choose between 8GB and 16GB of RAM. The screen is a 4K PANTONE-validated unit that has support for face login and a stylus. It also covers 100 percent of the colours in the sRGB colour space. The speakers are certified by Harman Kardon. The ZenBook Flip 13 comes with a new feature called NumberPad, which is essentially a touchpad that doubles up as a soft numeric keypad. The NumberPad sits inside the glass-covered Windows precision touchpad with support for multi-finger gestures and can be enabled or disabled with a touch of a soft key on the touchpad. According to Asus, the NumberPad can be used in “cruise” mode (to move the mouse pointer around) even without disabling the soft numeric keypad on the NumberPad as the firmware inside is capable of understanding the context of the user’s activities on the surface of the NumberPad.  The ZenBook Flip 15, on the other hand, gives the innovative new NumberPad a miss as its frame is large enough to support a physical numeric keypad as a part of its keyboard. According to Asus, the NumberPad is a novel solution to the lack of a dedicated numeric keypad on small laptops.

Google updates WearOS with new design making it easier to access information

Google has announced a new update for Wear OS, which brings new UI changes. The update makes it easier for users to access information such as notifications, and Google Assistant as well as smarter health coaching. The company noted in its blog that the new update will be rolling out to users over the coming month. However, the company says that some features may vary by phone OS, watch or country. With the new update, swiping up lets users access their notifications and tapping on any message brings up Smart Replies. Swiping down will enable users to access features like Google Pay or ‘Find My Phone’. As per Google, users will now receive proactive and personalised help from the Assistant. For example, if the user receives an update for their flight status, tapping on the update will show them the weather at their destination, and give them options for hotel reservations. Google also announced that it would be adding two new activity goals with this update, namely Heart points and Move Minutes. The new activities are designed in partnership with the American Heart Association and the World Health Organisation. Users can swipe left to access the new activity goals and tap on one to start an activity.  Back in July, Google had rolled out an update for WearOS that introduced new functionalities such as a ‘glanceable design’ for events and appointments. After the update, the Google Pay app is said to boot faster and contactless payments using cards or smartphones should also be quicker than before. It fixes a time zone sync bug as well.

The Ocean Cleanup is launching a giant floater to tackle the great Pacific garbage patch

The Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit organisation funded in 2013 by the then 18 year old Boyan Slat. The purpose of the company is to tackle the plastic waste in the oceans. Now, they are on the verge of launching one of the most ambitious attempts to cleanup the great Pacific garbage patch.  The patch is a giant vortex of garbage that spans the largest ocean on the planet, from the west coast of North America to the east coast of Japan. The floating litter accumulates here because of a system of cyclic ocean currents - or gyres. The plastic litter can stay in the oceans practically forever. In the gyres, the plastic does break up into smaller and smaller pieces though. Millimeter sized pieces of plastic gets consumed by the marine life forms. These toxic plastic particles make their way up the food chain, and even ends up in seafood restaurants around the world - which are then consumed by humans. Conventional approaches of cleaning the patch involves using fleets of vessels tugging nets in their wakes to capture the garbage. Such an effort would take thousands of years, and would cost billions of dollars.  The 600 meter long floater The solution? The System 001. It is a 600 meter long floater, with a skirt underneath it for the entire length. The skirt tapers over its three meter length. The floater follows the currents in the ocean, and captures any litter in its way. This is essentially sending an artificial coastline into the ocean, where there is none to stop the floating garbage. The floater is shaped like a U so that all the garbage gets concentrated in its center. The floater juts out of the water just enough to prevent plastic from going over it. The skirt below captures the bulk of the plastic, which floats just beneath the surface. The skirt is continuous, and not a net. This ensures that even small pieces of plastic is trapped. At the same time, the skirt prevents marine life from getting entangled or tagged, they can simply swim under or around it. Additionally, it ensures that the current flows beneath the skirt, on which the tiny marine life without the ability to swim, can hitch a ride.  There is no artificial propulsion on board, and the floater makes its way through the oceans riding on the natural currents, the wind, and the waves. The trajectory of the floater is calculated by algorithms ahead of the deployment. There is an energy system on board to capture solar energy for the lights and on board Automatic Identification System - a satellite based system to keep track of vessels in the ocean. There are also two high definition 360 degrees cameras in the middle of the floater, for remote real time monitoring. There are lanterns and navigational beacons to alert any vehicles in the area. There is not much traffic in the great Pacific garbage patch anyway.  The floater and the skirt are built to be long lasting and robust, to endure any conditions that the sea can throw at it. The engineers considered extreme cases that occur only once in a hundred years. The main reason for the hardiness of the floater, is how flexible it is. Even when faced with five meter high waves, the floater simply floats over these waves. A system of sensors along the entire length of the floater makes sure that it is functioning as expected at all times.  The garbage is cleaned up periodically by oceanic “garbage trucks” - ships that visit the floater and collect the garbage trapped by the floater. The actual collection is a manual process, which ensures that there is no marine life that is picked up along with the garbage. The collected plastic waste is brought back to land, and sold to recyclers. Time Magazine called the “ocean vacuum cleaner” one of the best inventions of 2015.   The Impact The System 001 is the first operation by the Ocean Cleanup. The initial plan was to create a moored barrier, permanently anchored in the ocean. A feasibility study showed that a moving floater would allow the ocean to clean itself up. The next step was to raise funds through crowdfunding on the ABN Amro’s Seeds platform. A total of US $2,154,282 was raised, making it one of the most successful non-profit fundings. There was a number of tests in the North Atlantic and the North Sea, and the design was improved over these iterations. On September 8, the first cleanup operation of the System 001, nicknamed “Wilson” will launch from the San Francisco Bay. Wilson will make its way towards the Pacific garbage patch on its own from there. The launch will be livestreamed. More information is available on the launch page.  The September 8 launch is just the beginning of the cleanup operation of the Pacific garbage patch. The floater is scalable, and eventually the organisation wants to deploy 100 kilometer long floaters. The skirts on these floaters will continue to have a length of 3 meters. In 2020, the team plans to move up to tackling garbage in the oceans worldwide. The eventual aim is to reduce up to 90 percent of the plastic waste in the ocean by the year 2040, and completely remove the plastic by 2050. Going by simulations, a rollout of the 100 kilometer long floaters would clean up 50 percent of the plastic in the Pacific Garbage patch as early as 2023.

OnePlus 55T OxygenOS Open Beta update brings Gaming Mode 30, front camera portrait mode and more

OnePlus is rolling out the new OxygenOS Open Beta 17 and the Open Beta 15 update for the OnePlus 5 and 5T smartphones respectively. The new patch brings a slew of optimisations for the two smartphones and enables Gaming Mode 3.0 and the front-facing portrait mode, which was only available on the OnePlus 6 (review) till now. Alongside these changes, the changelog of the new Open Beta lists many system level changes, updates to the Weather, Note apps and more. The Android security patch has also been updated to August, 2018. Starting with the most notable features brought along in the new Open Beta, the smartphones now support capturing images in portrait mode while using the front-facing camera. The Gaming Mode 3.0 is rolled out for the OnePlus 5/5T with this update. The feature is aimed at users who don’t want to be disturbed by any other activities on the device while gaming. It suspends all incoming app notifications and boosts data priority for the apps that are set to run under the Gaming Mode. Coming to system optimisations, the handsets get Toast message source that can be helpful to find out applications that send Toast messages, while running in the  background. Background power consumption control has also been optimised and a call recording issue that was plaguing uses in India has been fixed.  OnePlus’ suite of pre-installed apps like Weather, Note and the OnePlus Switch app also get some new functionalities. The Weather app can now send out hourly weather forecasts and shows 8 units of meteorological data including precipitation probability and perceived temperature. The overall weather data accuracy is also said to have been improved. The Note app gets its UI revamped along with an optimised process for sharing notes as an image, while the UI on the OnePlus Switch app has been optimised.  OnePlus' previous Open Beta 16 update for devices that added some camera improvements and reduced the “oil painting effect” in photos captured using the smartphones. Some OnePlus users have previously complained that the device’s camera captured softer images which looked like oil paintings. While some may like the artistic images that are produced due to the issue, it is a hindrance for those who want to capture true-to-life images. The update also added Google Lens support for the smartphone from within the stock camera app. You can read more about it here.

Samsung announces 8K Q900R QLED TVs

If you are looking to buy a state of the art 4K TV, then you may want to check this out. Samsung has announced that it is bringing 8K QLED TVs to the market. 8K TVs have four times more pixels than a 4K TV. Dubbed the Q900R series, the 8K QLED TVs from Samsung will be available in four sizes – 65-inch, 75-inch, 82-inch and 85-inch. There is no information available about the price or launch date for the TVs. The TVs have a maximum of 4000 nits of brightness which should be great for HDR content. With TV technology one of the key factors to focus on is the processor. The 8K TVs from Samsung will be powered by the Quantum Processor 8K. The processor of the TV boasts of AI Upscaling. This will be an important feature to show off as there isn’t a lot of 8K content going around to exploit the TV. AI in the case of the 8K TVs processor will be used to identify how to best upscale non 8K content on the TV. The system will maintain a sort of database every time it upscales content to help figure out the best way to make the content look good. Speaking of backlighting, the Q900R series of 8K TVs will have full array of backlighting. This is better than edge lit backlighting found on several LED TVs today. Samsung hasn’t said how many dimming zones the TV will have. Carrying 8K information over HDMI will require a lot of bandwidth. Thankfully, the new Q900R series from Samsung will support an HDMI 2.1 port, which is nice. Samsung has confirmed that the Q900R’s colour range is 100% of the DCI-P3 digital cinema spectrum. Also, the 8K AI Upscaling will work across any input, streaming service, set-top box, HDMI and USB. The company claims that it will work with mobile mirroring also. Last but not least, the Q900R series will have Samsung’s Ambient Mode. This means that instead of seeing a black mirror on your wall, you have the option to see digital artwork or photograph. In this mode, the TV uses very little power. In India, Samsung recently announced the launch of their Onyx screens in theatres in India to replace traditional projectors. We had a chance to experience the screen at a theatre in Delhi. It has been installed in PVR Vasant Kunj. You can read more about Samsung’s Onyx screens here.
